Other types of headaches are treated differently. The most common harmless but painful headaches are vascular headaches. Migraines and cluster headaches belong to this group but both must be treated differently as well. It's assumed that a dilation of the blood vessels is the reason for the pain.
Migraines are strong headaches in one or both parts of the head which can take hours or even days. Cluster headaches are characterized by several sudden and very severe pain attacks which are located behind or above one eye which additional symptoms like a droopy eyelid, tearing or sweating. They can disappear for weeks or months before they come again while migraines come more periodically.
For both types of headaches prevention is better than trying to get pain relief after the headache has already started. This is especially true for cluster headaches because they come without sign of warning with sudden pain that pain killers don't help quickly enough. Conventional pain killers like Aspiring, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol don't help with cluster headaches but well with migraines. The best known way to abort cluster headaches is inhaling pure oxygen which can bring relief within a few minutes. Also injections of steroids are donw to bring quick relief. Another way is using Triptan drugs like Sumatriptan or Zolmitriptan. Natural remedies are hot showers and exercise.
These treatments are not recommended by migraines because they can make the migraine worse. For migraines you should lie down, breath slowly and relax. Darken the room. Conventional pain killers help. Make cold compresses applied to your forehead, temples and neck. Some report that hot compresses help them better but in theory the cold compresses should help better against the dilation of the blood vessels.
Also a strong hot cup of coffee helps to narrow the arteries. A hot tee of feverfew has been used since centuries against migraines. Many say that Magnesium supplements help against migraines. Many also report that frequent exercise has reduce the occurrence of migraines clearly.
The best treatment for chronic headaches is to find out what causes them. Often triggers can be identified and avoided to reduce headaches. Get aware of what you eat and what you do and run a diary for a few days when you headaches occur, what you ate and did before. Common triggers are stress, flashing lights, noise and certain foods like refined sugars, alcohol, red wine, milk products.
